Clarissa needs a husband before the next week and so she drags her lawyer to the rail yards, investigates the men working there and chooses a likely fellow to fit the bill. One stands out from all the rest--a lean-hipped, swaggering, handsome as sin stranger whose blue eyes and black hair captivates her. He looks capable, a man strong enough to defend his family and his wife from her grasping Uncle who's trying to steal her life's work.... the business she'd helped her father build. Once married, she fulfills the codicil in her father's will and the law proclaims her as the rightful owner.... except that they must stay married for one year and seen to be living together as man and wife. She never expected to want that year to last forever.

Devin, a workingman who boxes in the evenings and weekends to earn extra for his family, has a great need of the money this socialite offers when she approaches with her marriage proposal. Feeling his Irish background and poor immigrant status could never make him a man she'd be able to love, he battles his attraction and continuous struggles and misunderstandings abound. But romance has it way in this lovely story and the satisfaction of a happy ending makes this a wonderful tale.

In order to be able to keep her father's company and manage it at a time when women were considered fragile creatures only preoccupied with their family, socializing and clothing, Clarissa has to find herself a husband with a strong back and a weak mind. Devin, a poor Irish immigrant, tries his best to get his younger brother and sister from the poverty and difficult future facing them. Clarissa's offer looks too good to bypass.
I love Lilly Gayle's characters. She gives Clarissa and Devin perfect motivations to be together and then throws them into a delicious conflict. While trying to understand the unexpected attraction that confuses both of them, they have to fight Clarissa's enemies. Wholesale Husband is a fast-paced story, with good suspense, and sensual tension. It reminded me of the historical novels of Johanna Lindsey and Kathleen Woodiwiss that I loved so much.
Loved WOLESALE HUSBAND! This heart-wrenching amazing book is loaded with all the necessary elements of a great romance. Off-beat, hard-headed, strong heroine? Check! Strong, muscular, handsome, dashing hero? Check! Loads of Conflict? Check! Romantic tension through? Double-check! Conflict-internal and external? Check! Check! All of the elements are there?
Lilly Gayle has delivered a blizzardly good time in Clarissa's story. I had a blast sharing her journey in the gilded age of 1888 in New York City. What a glorious ride! With such vivid writing. I found myself swept away by the sights, sounds, smells, ans so on. I also enjoyed the characters, Clarissa and Devin, immensely. In fact, I can't remember the last time I had such a blast reading a novel. I take that back, I can remember enjoying Lilly's first two books, OUT OF THE DARKNESS and SLIGHTLY TARNISHED. My only Complaint? There's not sequels to all three books. I'll just have to guess what's coming next with Lilly's writing.
The storyline of WHOLESALE HUSBAND tells of a marriage of convenience between Clarissa and Devin. Clarissa entered into a marriage contract to try and take control of her deceased father's company from her uncle, Silas, who had obtained the company from her father. Devin, an Irishman, entered into the marriage contract to provide for his family. He needed to send his sister, Fiona, to a fancy boarding school and also help his brother, Gareth, who worked at a meat-packing plant by day and unloaded cargo on the docks at night. Devin worked in a ice plant during the day and fought in a boxing ring at night to supplement his income.
Will this marriage of convenience turn into true love. The slizzling sexual scences between Clarissa and Devin were Va-Va-Voom with tingling lust and romantic innundo. You'll have to read WHOLESALE HUSBAND to see what happens.
I'm not one for American historicals, prefering Regency and Victorian, however this was one I thouroughly enjoyed reading. I love the idea of a powerful woman, one that the man needs as much as she needs him. Definitely another hit for Lily Gayle.
I love stories of arranged marriages, of two people brought together by life's circumstances, who ultimately fall deeply in love with each other. Folks, my was smokin' with this charming story Ms. Gayle wove for her readers. The plot was like a fine dance of one step together and two steps apart, a sudden twirl, a sensual dip, a sweet sigh. If you enjoy historical romance and delightful characters who grow into the people they were meant to be, choose this book. It's in my Keeper File, still smoldering and waiting for a reread. WELL DONE!
Wholesale Husband was both touching and entertaining as Clarissa and Devin bargain to marry for purely business purposes. She wants to take over her deceased father's company, and he wants to offer a better life to his brother and sister. But what woman with blood running through her veins could resist a charming Irishman such as her new husband? This marriage of convenience got tricky from the start, was theirs a purely business relationship? What about the physical feelings brewing between them? Though the couple found comfort in each other's arms, true love, which requires the key element of trust, took much longer to find. The secondary story about her father's death and the lost company ledgers was engrossing to the very end. Think Gangs of New York for style and setting.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Wholesale Husband by Lilly Gayle and recommend it.
